The Tomifobia Nature Trail, jewel of the Eastern Townships, is transferred to the Massawippi Conservation Trust

Special Announcement

The Massawippi Conservation Trust (MCT) and Les Sentiers Massawippi are pleased to announce the transfer of ownership of the Tomifobia Nature Trail to MCT. This generous donation, legally finalized on December 15, follows thoughtful discussions between the two organizations on the best way to protect and manage the trail and its surrounding lands in perpetuity.

The trail, created in 1990 by a small group of dedicated visionaries including George Foster, Ray Banham, and Keith Baxter, was built on a former CP Rail line to become a 19-km, year-round, multi-use linear park. Stretching between Ayer’s Cliff and Stanstead and passing through five municipalities, the Tomifobia Nature Trail is cherished by walkers, cyclists, birders, and cross-country skiers alike.

As the new owners, MCT is committed to maintaining the trail and preserving its natural and heritage value for future generations.

Richard Violette, President of Les Sentiers Massawippi, notes:
“The preservation of the Tomifobia Nature Trail is essential as a protected, historic, and natural public corridor for safe cycling, hiking, and nature observation.”

Margot Graham Heyerhoff, Founder and President of the Massawippi Foundation and Trustee of MCT, adds:
“We are deeply grateful to Les Sentiers Massawippi for entrusting us with the perpetual protection of this remarkable trail, which holds significant environmental and heritage value.”

The transition will take place over the coming months with the support of Les Sentiers Massawippi. Further updates will follow as the trail is fully integrated into the Massawippi Conservation Trust, with the financial support of the Massawippi Foundation.

We extend our sincere thanks to both organizations’ teams, as well as to our donors and members, whose continued support helps ensure a green and flourishing Massawippi Valley for all and forever.
